Night Brigade.
Faint light picked out the night brigade
As they came down through the valley
The reserve troop watched them
With an air of melancholy
An eerie quiet descended
As they disappeared into the night
Need to be in position
Before the early morning light
The big push is on tomorrow
Manchester’s are holding the line
The start of the attack will be here
If they get past the mines
The glowing ends of cigarettes
Flit like fireflies in the night air
Last thoughts and memories
Before the soul is laid bare
Breathing is shallow and laboured
As thoughts of tomorrow draw near
At the start of these campaigns
It was excitement tinged with fear
And so the night brigade has gone
Into the forward trenches en-masse
And we the reserves sit here
With a nod and a smile as they passed
